Welcome to IT

Congratulations and welcome to the Institute of Technology! We're glad that you're joining the IT community, and we'll do all that we can to help you get started at the U.

The Office of Student Services and Institute of Technology Academic Advising will help incoming undergraduates prepare for their first semester in IT. You'll receive details about placement testing, orientation, registration, and other important steps you need to take before classes start.

Graduate students will receive information about related matters from the Graduate School and from their department.

Placement tests

Incoming IT undergraduates are required to take placement tests in chemistry and math. These tests give you and your advisor essential information about your current skills so you begin your college studies at an appropriate level.

All testing is done on the Web. IT will send you all the information you need, including a username and password, and the URL of the online testing site for math and chemistry. You need to wait until you receive your placement testing information from IT before you can test. Testing is conducted in the spring.

Orientation

IT will send you information about orientation, a required program for all incoming undergraduate students. Freshmen attend a two-day orientation; transfer students attend a daylong event.

The college will schedule your orientation dates; if you are unable to attend your assigned orientation, contact Institute of Technology Academic Advising at 612-624-2890.

During orientation you'll learn about campus facilities and services, get your student ID card, meet with an advisor, and register for classes. You also can tour campus and buy course textbooks.

To help us with planning for your orientation, please complete our orientation survey.

International students

Newly admitted international students should consult the helpful pre-arrival information prepared by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).

All new international students (undergraduate and graduate) must attend an additional orientation program administered by ISSS. This orientation is designed to acquaint you with the University, ISSS programs and services, and your rights and responsibilities as an international student.

Housing and employment

Apply for on-campus housing through the Department of Housing and Residential Life. The housing office also helps students find off-campus accommodations.

Find an on-campus job through the U of M Job Center. Freshmen are eligible for a special guaranteed job program.
