Special graduate student categories
Professional development
If you want to enroll in a field
in the Graduate School but do
not want to obtain a graduate
degree, you may apply for admission
for
“professional development
course work.” Applicants must
complete the usual application
materials and meet existing deadlines
and admission standards. Some programs
restrict admission to degree-seeking
students so consult the director
of graduate studies in your field
of interest before applying.
Earning
graduate credit as a nondegree student
U of M undergraduates
University of Minnesota students who have no more than seven semester
credits or two courses to complete for their bachelor's degree (including
both distribution and total credit requirements) may register in
the Graduate School to begin a graduate program while simultaneously
completing their baccalaureate work. A final bachelor's transcript
must be submitted before the second term of registration.
Change of status and readmission
Graduate students who have not registered at least once each year
are considered to have withdrawn, and their Graduate School records
are deactivated. Deactivated students who want to resume graduate
work must request readmission to the Graduate School by filing the
Change
of Status/Readmission Request form. Currently registered students
who are seeking a change of major, degree objective, or campus of
enrollment must also file the form.
If you wish to enroll in a Graduate School postbaccalaureate certificate
program, you should use the Change of Status/Readmission application
to indicate your proposed change of status. You should equate "postbaccalaureate
certificate" with "degree" for the purposes of completing
the application. If you wish to withdraw from your current major
and pursue a certificate program only, you should use the "Change
of major" box; if you wish to add a certificate program to
be pursued concurrently with your current major you should use the
"Additional major" box.

CIC Traveling Scholar Program
The University participates in the Traveling Scholar Program
for graduate students enrolled in Committee on Institutional Cooperation
(CIC) institutions ("Big Ten” universities, University of
Chicago, University of Illinois-Chicago, and the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee). Doctoral students at any CIC university
may take advantage of educational opportunities at another CIC
institution without a change in registration or a fee increase.
You may take advantage of these opportunities for three quarters
or two semesters.
