Transfer admission
The University of Minnesota's Office of Admissions handles all applications for undergraduate admission to the Institute of Technology (IT).
You are considered a transfer student if you have previously enrolled in any course for college credit after graduating from high school. If you are a high school student and are enrolled in PSEO, College in the Schools, or have earned AP credit, you are still considered a freshman. If you are an international transfer student, click here.
Admission to the Institute of Technology is competitive and based on a holistic review of your application. In addition to the University of Minnesota's transfer admission requirements, applicants to the Institute of Technology will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
Technical GPA
Most successful applicants to the Institute of Technology have a 3.0 or higher technical grade point average (tech GPA). This GPA consists of courses in math, physics, and chemistry (beginning with equivalents to those listed below) as well as engineering and computer science courses.
Prerequisite coursework
At a minimum, applicants to the Institute of Technology should have first year technical courses completed at the time of transfer. Due to the sequencing of courses in many majors, it is important to review the Four Year Graduation Plan for the major that you are considering to determine the best time to transfer. The prerequisite coursework necessary for each course is listed in parentheses below the course name and number.
| Course |
Important Notes |
One year of calculus
(equivalent to MATH 1271 & 1272) |
|
One year of calculus based physics
(equivalent to PHYS 1301 W & 1302W) |
Applicants with less than two semesters may still be considered for admission based on the overall strength of their record. However, they should be aware that this may delay their expected graduation as it is a prerequisite for many courses. |
One semester of chemistry
(equivalent to CHEM 1021) |
Applicants who are pursuing a degree in a chemistry based major (ChEn, BME, Chem, BBE, or MatSci) must have two semesters completed (equivalent to CHEM 1022). |
Equivalency for technical courses has been established between Institute of Technology and many colleges and universities. Transfer plans for individual colleges are also available. Technical courses in which a D has been earned do not transfer to meet Institute of Technology degree requirements.
Intra-University transfers and readmission
If you are transferring from one degree program to another on the Twin Cities campus, or if you are transferring from the University of Minnesota coordinate campuses of Crookston, Duluth, or Morris, you must complete a Change of College form.
If you are returning to a degree program from an absence of one year or longer, you must complete an Application for Readmission.
