Transfer admission

The University of Minnesota Office of Admissions handles all applications for undergraduate admission to IT.

You're considered a freshman applicant if you have not earned college credit after high school graduation; all other individuals are classified as transfer applicants.

High school graduates who have completed less than a full year of college course work at the time of application will be considered for admission using a combination of transfer and freshman admissions criteria. Transfer students who have completed a year or more of college work are considered for admission with advanced standing.

Transfer admission requirements

All transfer applicants must have successfully completed the University's high school preparation requirements.

Students planning to transfer to IT should be pursuing a lower division engineering, science, or math program. By the time you apply for admission, you should have completed most of the mathematics, chemistry, physics, and computer science courses required for your preferred major.

Admission decisions are based on the overall GPA using grades in science and mathematics. Because demand for some IT programs exceeds available spaces, applicants are asked to indicate three majors in order of preference.

Transfer GPA guidelines

Many courses transfer routinely. Equivalency for technical courses has been established between IT and many colleges and universities. Technical courses in which a D has been earned do not transfer to meet IT degree requirements. Transfer plans for individual colleges are also available. To view course equivalency guides or transfer plans from your college or university, see the following web site: www.it.umn.edu/admissions/transfer/credit.html

Intra-University transfers and readmission

Students enrolled at the U's Twin Cities or coordinate campuses who wish to transfer to IT must apply for an intra-University transfer.

University students who have not been granted a formal leave of absence or who haven't registered for two consecutive semesters (excluding summer session) must complete the Application for Readmission.
