Professional registration for engineers

Registration as an engineer is a legal requirement for certain kinds of practice. In most states, the license is awarded to graduates of an accredited engineering curriculum who have passed examinations in the fundamentals, principles, and practice of engineering and who have a specified number of years of appropriate experience.

The Minnesota State Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying and Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design is the agency that licenses engineering professionals and administers the examinations. Contact the agency for information about examination dates and registration materials.

The University offers several courses designed to prepare new graduates and engineering professionals to take these exams.

Fundamentals of Engineering Examination

The Fundamentals of Engineering examination (also known as the Engineer-in-Training exam) covers materials studied in undergraduate curricula and may be taken by students in their senior year as well as new graduates. The examination is given twice a year, in fall and spring.

IofT 1: Fundamentals of Engineering Review

This course prepares engineering graduates for the Fundamentals of Engineering examination (formerly called the Engineer-in-Training examination), the first of two written exams required for registration as a professional engineer (P.E.). Course content includes a review of mathematics, chemistry, materials, statics, dynamics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, electric circuits, fluid mechanics, and engineering economics. The course is offered twice a year, in fall and spring.

Professional Engineering Examination

The following courses prepare engineers for the Minnesota Professional Engineering Examination, the second of two examinations required for P.E. licensure.

CE 5: Refresher Course for Civil Engineers

This course is a review of civil engineering fundamentals required to pass the Minnesota Professional Engineering Examination in civil engineering. Offered annually in the spring. Prerequisite for the course is a B.C.E. or equivalent degree or completion of Parts I and II of the State Board Examination.

EE 1: Refresher Course for Electrical Engineers

This course is a review of electrical engineering fundamentals required to pass the Minnesota Professional Engineering Examination in electrical engineering. Course content is material ordinarily contained in electrical engineering college curriculum. Emphasizes problem solving with orientation as close possible to type of questions in exam. Course prerequisites are a B.S.E.E. or B.E.E., passing grade on Fundamentals of Engineering exam, and four years of electrical engineering experience.

ME 1: Refresher Course for Mechanical Engineers

This course is an organized review of topics in mechanical engineering program in preparation for Minnesota Professional Engineering Exam. The course emphasizes problem solving, organization Sof information/notes, and trial exams.
