Featured Speaker: Michael Berman

Michael Berman is one of Minnesota’s most respected entrepreneurs, having cofounded six companies, served as chairman of four of those companies, and invested in more than a dozen private companies. He currently serves on the boards of 10 emerging medical-device companies: Aetherworks, BeneChill, CoAxia, Curon Medical, Myocor, Prospex Medical, Ortaco, TopSpin, Transoma Medical, and UltraShape. He is also a partner in Israeli venture capital firm Israel Seed Partners.

From 1995 to 2000, he served as president of Boston Scientific’s cardiology business, and from 1997 to 2000 he was a member of Boston Scientific’s executive committee. During this time he led a division of more than 4,000 employees and managed the growth of the business from $300 million in sales to $1.5 billion, overseeing four interventional cardiology acquisitions, more than $250 million in research and technology, and 40 new product launches.

In 2000, Berman decided to follow his entrepreneurial passion when he cofounded Velocimed, a medical-device company specializing in minimally invasive cardiovascular and neurovascular devices. Velocimed was acquired by St. Jude Medical in April 2005 for $82.5 million plus $180 million in contingent payments.

Berman is respected for his ability to translate complex technical ideas into viable products. His 25-year career in the medical-device industry includes a variety of senior marketing and management positions.

A native of Ithaca, N.Y., Berman received an M.B.A. and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University.
